Intro
Artists’ works and thoughts always make me ponder the subject matters, appreciate and celebrate life on a deeper level. Like a constellation in the sky, artists unfold each of their universe once I quietly look into the glimmers in the dark. Digital Body: New Media Art 2018 features 43 new media artists worldwide who passionately represent and symbolize each of their own realities. I hope our readers plunge into the artists’ worlds and celebrate the new culture in this digital era.
아티스트들을 접하면 접할수록 그 깊이감에 감탄한다. 그들의 작품과 생각들을 접하며 나는 삶을 보다 깊이 음미하는 법을 배웠다. 밤하늘에 무수한 별처럼, 적막 속에서 작은 빛을 가만히 바라볼 때 비로소 그들은 그들의 세계를 연다. “디지털 바디: 뉴 미디어 아트 2018″은 43명의 전 세계 뉴 미디어 아티스트들의 작품 세계를 소개한다. 그들은 각자의 현실을 열정적으로 재현해내고 상징화한다. 독자가 아티스트들 각자의 고유의 세계를 접하며 디지털 시대의 새로운 문화를 향유하는 장이 되었으면 한다.

‘디지털 바디: 뉴 미디어 아트 2018’는 CICA 미술관 김리진 아트디렉터가 기획한 ‘New Media Art’ 시리즈 북의 세 번째 호로, 전 세계에서 두각을 나타내고 있는 43명의 뉴미디어 아티스트 그룹과 평론가들의 영어 원문과 한글 번역본 및 2017 제1회 CICA 뉴 미디어 아트 국제 컨퍼런스 리뷰를 싣고 있다.

“Celebrate & Share Creativity and Techno-Cultural Innovation”
Started from the sculptor Czong Ho Kim’s studio in 1994, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA) became a unique cultural space founded and cultivated by him. Not only CICA fosters projects of experimental artists, we are open for everyone to learn about Contemporary Art and apply it to one’s life. We aim to provide a creative, yet comfortable space for artists and the community to nurture their creative and critical thinking with visual culture while they communicate with each other.
CICA Museum have featured numerous new media artists in international exhibition series and publications. Through CICA NMA Conference, we aim to celebrate new media art & culture, and share creativity and techno-cultural innovations with writers, scholars, artists, and local/international communities. We invite new media artists, scholars, and art-lovers worldwide to participate in our first international Conference on New Media Art. We look forward to sharing fun, exciting, and inspiring experience with you!
창의력과 문화 기술 혁신을 공유하고 향유하는 국제 문화의 장
CICA 미술관에서 2017원 8월 3일부터 6일까지 제1회 CICA 뉴 미디어 아트 국제 컨퍼런스를 개최한다. 해외 및 국내 아티스트와 전문가 Justin Lincoln, Morgan Jenks, S/N, Kay Yoon, Anatoly Rudakov, Pierre Chaumont, 권희수, 김리진, 박승만, 오온누리, 유경진, 최이지가 컨퍼런스 프레젠테이션을 진행할 예정이며, 본 행사는 영어로 진행된다.
CICA 미술관은 작가의 작업실을 기반으로 손수 일구어낸 독특한 미술관으로 사진, 회화, 조각뿐만이 아니라 뉴 미디어 아트 국제전을 활발히 기획해 왔으며 “아트 옐로 북,” “뉴 미디어 아트” 시리즈 등 서적도 활발히 출판해 왔다. 아트디렉터 김리진은 전 세계 뉴 미디어 아티스트, 학자, 미술 애호가들을 초청하여 뉴 미디어 아트와 문화를 향유하고, 지역 주민과 미술인, 학자들이 어우러져 창의력과 문화 기술 혁신을 공유하는 국제적인 장을 마련하고자 본 행사를 기획하게 되었다고 전했다.
7월 오픈 예정인 CICA 포럼 건물에서 본 행사 오프닝 파티가 있을 예정이며 김포시 이홍균 부시장의 인사말, DJ 퍼포먼스, 참여 작가 프레젠테이션 등 다양한 이벤트를 준비 중이다. 또한 오프닝 파티는 영한 동시통역으로 진행하여 일반인들도 부담 없이 이벤트에 참여하고 전 세계 뉴 미디어 아티스트와 직접 소통할 수 있다.
또한 8월 5일에는 김포시 문화예술행정과와 CICA 미술관이 협업하여 김포 시티투어 및 워크숍, “변화하는 도시와 새로운 문화”를 주최할 예정이다. 본 워크숍을 통해 해외 아티스트 및 국내 아티스트와 미술 애호가들에게 문화 도시 김포시의 무한한 가능성과 매력을 소개한다. 워크숍에서 나온 결과물은 컨퍼런스 마지막 행사, 8월 6일 “굿 바이 브런치 앤 퍼포먼스”에서 발표될 예정이다.
컨퍼런스는 일반인도 참여할 수 있으며, 오프닝 파티 및 굿 바이 브런치 앤 퍼포먼스 행사는 단일 이벤트로도 참여 신청 가능하다. 참여 신청은 CICA NMAC 웹사이트 (http://cicamuseum.com/nmaconference/)에서 할 수 있다.

“Artist Book Their DIY Art Space”
CICA Museum’s art book project “Art Yellow Book” provides a unique art space for artists. Unlike gallery spaces, art books are portable and ubiquitous. Unlike online media, books are tactile and “real.” Art Yellow Book aims to create a space where individual artists can freely express themselves and become media themselves.
Art Yellow Book #3 features 55 artists from around the world. Each artist freely organized two facing pages in the book, using these pages as an exhibition form and an advertisement for themselves and their work. There are no rules or restrictions regarding the layout, design, or content. If you would like to know more about the artists, visit their websites by scanning their QR codes, or contact them directly by email.
“아티스트들의 책속의 DIY 전시 공간”
CICA 미술관의 아트북 프로젝트 “아트 옐로북”은 아티스트들에게 독특한 전시 공간을 제공합니다. 기존의 전시 공간에 설치된 작품과는 다르게 아트 북은 쉽게 가지고 다닐 수 있고, 여러 사람이 동시에 공유할 수 있습니다. 또한 아트 북은 온라인 매체와는 다르게 직접 만지고 경험할 수 있다는 점에서 아날로그적인 매력도 있는 독특한 매체이기도 합니다. “아트 옐로 북”은 아티스트가 직접 자신을 표현하고 스스로 미디어가 될 수 있는 공간입니다.
2017년 3월에 출간 된 “아트 옐로 북 #3″는 시리즈 북의 두 번째 호로 국내외의 감각 있는 55명의 아티스트들이 직접 디자인한 페이지들로 구성되었습니다. 아티스트 한 명당 한 장(두 페이지)의 공간이 주어지며, 정해진 형식이나 제약은 없습니다. 해당 아티스트에 대해 더 알아보고자 한다면 QR 코드로 아티스트의 웹사이트를 방문하거나 아티스트에게 직접 메일을 보내보세요.

Objectified
칸트의 미학과 인간의 대상화에 대한 비판은 현대미술의 중요한 철학적 근간이 되었다. 칸트에게 목적을 가진 아름다움은 더 이상 아름다움이 아니었다. 예를 들어, 우리가 아름다운 자연을 바라볼 때 느끼는 “아름답다는” 감정은 목적이 없는 반면, 이성을 보고 느끼는 “아름답다는” 감정은 배고픈 것과 마찬가지로 목적성을 가지기 때문에 진정한 아름다움이 아니라는 것이다. 물론 포스트 모던 이후 시공간을 초월한 “미”에 대한 믿음은 사라졌지만, 서로의 치수 하나 하나, 주름 하나 하나에 신경쓰는 현 풍토에서 칸트의 시각은 진부하기보다는 오히려 신선하다.
하지만 대상화 (Objectified)가 주는 즐거움이 없다면 인생은 얼마나 무미건조하겠는가. 사람은 각자의 시선으로 세상을 바라보며 세상 전체를 대상화하고 왜곡하며 꿈을 꾼다. “첫사랑,” “이상형,” “연애,” “미녀,” “미남,” “사랑,” 이 모든 것들은 상대에 대한 왜곡이며 환상이다. 사람은 그가 속한 문화에서 환상을 공유하기를 원하며 점점 더 많은 사람이 그 환상을 공유하며 그 환상에 형태와 이야기를 만들어간다. 환상이 시간과 공간을 거치면서 그 거대해진 시선은 결국 사람에게로 돌아와 족쇄가 된다.
서로가 서로에게 대상화되는 과정은 전쟁과도 같다. 결국 서로의 환상의 충족을 위해 스스로를 대상화 해나간다. 결국 대상화의 과정은 사회화 과정과도 흡사하다. 여자로서, 남자로서, 자식으로서, 부모로서, 한국인으로서, 아시아인으로서, 각자의 위치와 나이에서 기대되는 모습으로 순응해간다. 결국 자신의 환상을 위해서 말이다.

Back to Nature
When Pokemon Go became an instant phenomenon, my husband and I decided to give it a try. We walked through the park and saw groups of people roaming around the empty field watching their cell phones. It was a funny but striking moment to see people getting back to nature as the result of a new media cultural innovation.
We do not even have to try; new media will gradually permeate our lives and become part of our reality. Google Maps, social media, YouTube, Pokemon Go, smartphones, drones, 3D printers, robots — all of our generation’s shared buzzwords will reshape our minds and become our nostalgia. And new media artists constantly reflect this metamorphosing reality like fragmented mirrors.

미국에서 포켓못 고 열풍이 불었을 때 나도 남편과 함께 앱을 다운로드 받았다. 함께 공원을 거닐며 아무것도 없는 빈 터에 다다랐을 때, 무리지어 스마트폰을 보며 여기저기 방황하는 사람들을 볼 수 있었다. 뉴 미디어가 가져다준 문화적 혁신의 결과로 결국 자연으로 돌아가 방황하는 군중의 모습은 웃기면서도 강렬한 장면이었다.
힘들게 노력하거나 애쓰지 않아도 좋다. 뉴 미디어는 자연스럽게 우리의 삶으로 스며들어와 현실이 된다. 구글맵, 소셜 미디어, 유튜브, 포켓몬 고, 신형 스마트 폰들, 드론, 3d 프린터와 로봇들 – 우리 세대가 공유하는 “핫한” 또는 “쿨한” 기술들은 우리의 사고방식을 다시 형성하며 곧 우리만의 노스텔지어가 될 것이다. 그리고 뉴미디어 아티스트는 거울 조각들처럼 변화하는 우리의 현실을 끊임없이 비춘다.

컴퓨터, 스마트폰, 타블렛 등 디지털 디바이스의 대중화는 현대인들의 일상에 많은 변화를 가져다 주었다. 이는 단순한 취미나 행동의 변화를 넘어서 새로운 사고와 언어, 문화를 창조해내고 있다.
디지털 문화는 예술의 철학적 개념과 테크닉, 시스템에도 근본적인 질문을 던진다. 작가가 손수 만든 작품은 하나 밖에 없는 작품으로서 가치를 지니고 이를 바탕으로 예술 시장이 형성되어 왔다. 하지만 디지털 작품은 작가와 작품 사이에 디지털 매체라는 매개물이 존재하며, 이 매체가 가지는 특성이 기존 매체에 비해 작품에 큰 영향을 준다. 또한 작품은 편재성을 지니는데, 즉 하나만 존재하는 것이 아니라 여러가지 형태로 동시에 존재 가능하며 무한히 재생산될 수 있다.
CICA 미술관에서 7월 22일에서 8월 7일까지 열리는 “디지털 컬쳐(Digital Culture)” 국제전에서는 34명의 국내외 작가들의 디지털 아트, 사진, 설치, 영상 작품을 소개한다. 특히 Yuanliang Sun, Steven Hughes, McArthur Freeman, Sarah Sweeney, Jason Lahr, H. Cecilia Suhr, Brian Schrank, Peter Christenson 등 미국 미술대학 교수들이 다수 참여하여 국제적 감각의 최신 디지털 아트를 소개할 예정이다. David Van Ness는 자신의 얼굴을 다수 3D 스캔하여 디지털 자소상을 만들었다. 그의 작품은 디지털 파일 및 다수의 이미지로서 존재한다. 한편 Brian Schrank 교수는 3D 아트 게임을 통하여 사회문제를 재조명한다. 관객은 애플 워치와 가상 현실 디바이스를 통해 작품을 직접 체험해볼 수 있다. 한편 Katy Dresner는 침대를 이용한 인터렉티브 아트를 선보일 예정이다.
