Digital media seem to lack physicality, of which we think as “texture.” As new media art evolves with digital technology, I recently have noticed “new textures” in them – glitches, pixelation, and virtual textures, which happen intentionally or unexpectedly. Eeriness of these new textures reminds me of the “uncanny valley” that resembles humans but is not humans anymore. New textures emerge in the middle of technological intervention and interaction. And these residues of mathematical calculations and errors form new aesthetics, stories, contexts, and realities.

New Texture: New Media Art 2019 features 36 new media artists worldwide, including Pierre Ajavon, Alessandro Avellis, Michael Black, Tom Burtonwood, Tristan Cai, Jade Chorkularb, Lacaste Eunice, Yuto Hasebe, Chih-ya Huang, Soa J. Hwang, Tian Jiang, Lara Kamhi, KairUs Art+Research, Ji Yong Kim, Mihyun Kim, Todd Kunkler, Heesoo Kwon, Jiaqing Mo, Christina Ivelisse Morris, Hannah Newman, Fongyee Ng, Min Park, Miock Park, Valentina Sciarra, Simon Šerc, Peim van der Sloot, Tamara Staser, Yuanliang Sun, Tore Terrasi, Cansu Topaloglu, Yang Wang, Rachel Lin Weaver, Jinjoo Yang, Kyungjin Yoo, and Lim Zeherng. I hope our readers find new textures in them reflecting their own realities across the globe.

CICA Press, an online and print media issued by CICA Museum, is media for art and culture from the perspective of young culture makers in spirit. CICA Press supports “young” culture makers, who have passion, critical thought, and desire for creative and experimental expression, regardless of their age and background. We have believed that our inexhaustible passion for art and expression and a reckless rebelliousness can change the world.

CICA Press deals with visual art and culture from perspectives of local artists. To overcome uniform dissemination of contemporary art from the “center of Art,” we aim to introduce local artists and cultures from different regions to global audiences and connect them with each other. CICA Press provides online and offline spaces to create a global network among local artists, designers, audiences, and communities so they can make, appreciate, and live in art in their regions and cultures.

Intro

Artists’ works and thoughts always make me ponder the subject matters, appreciate and celebrate life on a deeper level. Like a constellation in the sky, artists unfold each of their universe once I quietly look into the glimmers in the dark. Digital Body: New Media Art 2018 features 43 new media artists worldwide who passionately represent and symbolize each of their own realities. I hope our readers plunge into the artists’ worlds and celebrate the new culture in this digital era.

“As artists, in the end, meaning matters to us….but as we make our work we often hold meaning in suspension as the signal of bits or analog information passes through the lines of art production.”

– Justin Lincoln, ” Artist as Noise Source”

“Death is a radical and inevitable phenomenon that all surface once dominated one’s body is broken down into points. Line is a symbolic icon of essence that distinguishes life and death.”

– Kay Yoon, “1. Death and symbol”

“Violence towards women in film lives in every genre from every decade… It is draped in couture and handed smooth golden statues, minimized because it exists within the boundaries of entertainment.”

– Mary Hanlon, “The Veritas Technique”

“…The amount of visual content that we are subjected to through our internet usage practically demands swift thoughtlessness: otherwise we would all keel over trying to figure out the cultural and personal ramifications of some Honey Boo Boo gif…Sitting through the series, a viewer may begin to uneasily wonder, what is the difference between this pink painted man banging his head on the wall and myself, mindlessly plucking out chin hairs in front of the mirror late at night?”

– Joy Miller’s review on Ben Ehrmann’s “Pink Face Series”

“The scream is not yours. It is not you who speaks; it is your countless ancestors. It is not you who craves; countless generations of ancestors crave through your own heart.”

– Elissavet Sfyri, “Practicing”
