CICA Press, an online and print media issued by CICA Museum, is media for art and culture from the perspective of young culture makers in spirit. CICA Press supports “young” culture makers, who have passion, critical thought, and desire for creative and experimental expression, regardless of their age and background. We have believed that our inexhaustible passion for art and expression and a reckless rebelliousness can change the world.

To overcome uniform dissemination of contemporary art from the “center of Art,” we aim to introduce local artists and cultures from different regions to global audiences and connect them with each other. CICA Press provides online and offline spaces to create a global network among local artists, designers, audiences, and communities so they can make, appreciate, and live in art in their regions and cultures.

Contemporary art is like a hushed voice. It’s not an activist, taking to the streets to shout out loud to the world, nor is it a fanatic discourse, resonating through social media. We all know that the loudest voices tend to win out, and in this sense, artists might be considered cowards, preferring to hide in empty gallery spaces, mumbling their own stories to themselves. The audience accustomed to the loud voices, the voices of the media and advertisements, may not feel comfortable listening to the low voices of artists.
However, low voices are personal. Instead of the shout we use anonymously on the street, we use a whisper to impart words to a close friend or a lover. And when viewing art works, we have to listen for the artist’s mumbling, which can be hard to understand. Artists like to tell their stories in their own secret languages, more convoluted even than actual mumbled words. But there is a thrill to be found by following in their footsteps and deciphering their meaning.
And why do we need to listen to these hushed voices in the first place? Because they belong to famous artists? “Great” artists? Of course, there are many who pay attention to artists on account only of their fame. But, more importantly, these hushed voices are symbols of the voice of societies. By understanding artists’ voices, we begin to listen to our own. Unlike verbal language, the visual language of contemporary art acts as a mirror; we often reveal ourselves through our interpretation of art. In this sense, seeing a work of art becomes the equivalent of seeing one’s own self.

책소개
About “New Media Art 2015: Across Voices -속삭임”
New media art utilizes new media technology to create art. As the term “new” in new media art indicates how such art changes relatively with “newness,” new media art has constantly incorporated technologies considered “new” at the moment. The reason that new media artists are interested in new media technology is that contemporary artists look for their materials and subject matters in their daily lives, and they use these to express their realities. New media technologies are not only tools for work, but they also contain crucial features that may subvert philosophical concepts of “Art” and artworks. In addition, new media, including video, social media, the Internet, and smartphones, have become essential tools for communication these days, and have opened up new possibilities for communication between artists and the audience.
“New Media Art 2015: Across Voices” was published in conjunction with the exhibition “New Media Art 2015: Across Voices – 속삭임,” organized by Leejin Kim, an art director at CICA Musuem, Gimpo, Korea, March 21 – June 21, 2015. This book features works and truthful voices of new media artists in the United States and Korea: Matt Kenyon, Heidi Kumao, Sarah Nesbitt, Norbeto Gomez Jr., Justin Lincoln, LaTurbo Avedon, Jeong-ju Jung, Byeongwon Ha, Junsung Kim, Sin ifie, and Leejin Kim. By displaying their works and thoughts, we would like to highlight a cross section of New Media Art in 2015.
