현대 미술 분야에서 작가 세계를 직접 표현한 작가의 글이 부각되고 있는 이 시점에서 CICA 미술관에서는 국제전 및 영문 서적 출판 프로젝트 Artist Statement와 더불어, 한글 “작가 노트”를 소개하는 프로젝트를 기획하게 되었습니다. 작가 노트는 글자수나 형식이 비교적 제한적인 Artist Statement와 다르게 꾸밈없고 다소 거칠 때가 많지만, 작가의 치열한 삶과 작품에 관한 고민을 서술한, 지극히 개인적이지만 현대를 살고 있는 우리의 삶이 반영된 하나의 거울과 같은 글입니다. 한국 문화와 한글 특유의 정서를 담은 작가 노트를 통하여 보다 깊고 진솔한 작가 세계를 접해보시길 바랍니다.

Artist Statement 또는 Artist’s Statement (아티스트 스테이트먼트)란 작품에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 작가의 영감, 아이디어 및 작품 세계를 서술한 글이다. Artist Statement는 미국의 미술대학 및 미술계를 중심으로 1990년대부터 활발하게 쓰이기 시작했다. Artist Statement는 난해하고 개념적인 현대미술을 접근하기 위한 실용적인 “도구”이다. Artist Statement가 오히려 작품의 감상을 일정한 방향으로 국한할 수 있으며 작가의 자유로운 표현 방식을 저해한다는 비판적인 의견도 있지만, 제한된 2-4 문단의 글로 작가의 세계를 그려내는 한편의 시와도 같다는 점에서 작품 자체와 별개의 또 다른 매력이 있다.
CICA 미술관에서는 “Artist Statement” 전시 및 출판 시리즈를 통해 작가들의 최신 Artist Statement를 소개한다. Artist Statement #5는 Agathou Lilia , Rabia S. The circle is one of the most universal visual elements that has appeared from ancient art to contemporary art. It is a geometric shape found in nature that offers us visual and psychological comfort. The circle symbolizes totality, perfection, eternity, and cyclic movement and also relates to the sublime and rituals. CICA Museum’s international exhibition “Circle 2020” features photography, 2D digital art, video art, interactive art, painting, sculpture and installation art dealing with circles, roundness, circulation, repetition, rituals, and wholeness.
원은 고대부터 현대 미술까지 다양한 상징과 형태로 발견되는 가장 보편적인 미술적 요소 중에 하나이다. 원은 자연에서 발견되는 기하학적 형태로 시각적 안정감을 주며, 순환, 전체, 완전, 삶, 영원 등의 가치를 발현함과 동시에 숭고와 의식(ritual)적 측면과도 맞닿아 있다. CICA 미술관 국제전 “Circle 2020”은 원, 둥근 현태, 순환, 반복, 의례, 전체 등을 주제로 한 현대 사진, 회화, 비디오 및 인터렉트 아트, 조각 및 설치 작품을 소개한다.

Started from the sculptor Czong Ho Kim’s studio in 1994, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA) became a unique cultural space founded and cultivated by him. Not only CICA fosters projects of experimental artists, we are open for everyone to learn about Contemporary Art and apply it to one’s life. We aim to provide a creative, yet comfortable space for artists and the community to nurture their creative and critical thinking with visual culture while they communicate with each other.
In the CICA New Media Art Conference 2020 (CICA NMAC 2020), we aim to celebrate art in the digital age and share thoughts and ideas on new forms of art and culture in relation to emerging technologies and trends including artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality, social media, and the museum in the digital era. We highly value cultural exchanges among artists, researchers, and local residents worldwide and believe our event will inspire us and expand our understanding of new media art and culture in general. Due to the uncertain situation that requires social distancing, we have decided to actively incorporate new media technologies into our event, including live streaming, video conferencing, AR, and social media, so that new media artists, researchers, and guests worldwide can participate in the event physically and/or virtually. We invite new media art communities and art lovers worldwide to participate in our fourth international conference on New Media Art. We look forward to sharing fun, creative, and inspiring experiences with you!
CICA 미술관은 김종호 작가의 작업실을 기반으로 이십여 년에 거쳐 손수 일구어낸 독특한 미술관으로 김포시가 신도시로 변모하는 동안 역사를 고스란히 간직한, 구석구석 작가의 손길이 닿아있는 하나의 작품과도 같은 공간입니다. CICA 미술관은 사진, 회화, 조각뿐만이 아니라 뉴 미디어 아트 국제전 및 출판물을 활발히 기획해 왔으며 개관 이래 수많은 국내 및 해외 작가들이 CICA 미술관의 전시 및 출판에 참여해주시고 방문해 주셨습니다.
CICA 미술관에서 2020월 6월 18일부터 21일까지 제4회 CICA 뉴 미디어 아트 국제 콘퍼런스를 개최합니다. 전 세계의 예술과 삶에 대한 열정을 가진 아티스트들을 만날 수 있다는 것은 행운이며 삶에 많은 영감과 깊이감을 줍니다. 본 컨퍼런스에서는 라이브 스트리밍, 비디오 컨퍼런스, AR, 및 소셜 미디어와 같은 기술을 적극 활용하여 사회적 거리두기를 요하는 특수한 상황으로 인해 컨퍼런스에 직접 방문하지 못하는 전 세계 뉴 미디어 아티스트 및 관객들도 참여가 가능할 것입니다. 본 콘퍼런스를 통해 전 세계 아티스트, 학자, 미술 애호가, 지역 주민들이 뉴 미디어 아트와 문화 전반에 대한 생각들을 공유하는 뜻깊은 자리가 되기를 바랍니다.

CICA 미술관 국제전 “Objects 2020”은 대상화, found objects (파운드 오브제), 대중문화, 소비주의 등을 주제로 다루는 사진, 회화, 조각, 설치, 뉴 미디어 아트, 영상 작품을 전시합니다.
현대 미술이 서양 철학에 근간을 두고 있는 만큼, 본 전시에서는 “object”라는 단어가 가지는 미술사적 무게감과 이슈들에 초점을 맞추었습니다. object는 물체, 연구의 대상이라는 사전적 의미를 지닌 단어로 현대 미술사에서 중요한 개념 중의 하나입니다. 특히 “대상,” 즉 작가가 바라보는 “타자”로서의 대상의 의미가 강합니다. 예를 들어 흔히 말하는 성의 대상화, 또는 상품화의 맥락에서 대상을 타자화한 것을 “objectified”라고 표현하곤 합니다.
이러한 “object”에 대한 고찰은 칸트의 미학과 인간의 대상화에 대한 비판에서 뿌리를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 칸트는 목적을 가진 아름다움은 진정한 아름다움이 아니라고 생각했습니다. 예를 들어, 우리가 아름다운 자연을 바라볼 때 느끼는 “아름답다는” 감정은 목적이 없는 반면, 이성을 보고 느끼는 “아름답다는” 감정은 배고픈 것과 마찬가지로 목적성을 가지기 때문에 진정한 아름다움이 아니라는 것이지요. 물론 포스트모던 시대가 도래하여 시공간을 초월한 “미”에 대한 믿음은 이 역시 특정 계층의 시각과 취향을 반영하는 한계를 지닌다는 관점에서 많은 비판을 받게 되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 칸트의 철학은 “아름다움”이란 무엇인가라는 근본적인 질문을 다시금 생각해보게 합니다.
현대 사회의 무수한 소비주의적 이미지들은 상품, 사람을 불문하고 “대상”이 되어 소비자들에게 전해집니다. “Objects 2020” 전시는 소비주의 사회에서 대중에게 너무나도 익숙해진 “대상”의 이미지들을 조금은 다른, 다양한 시선으로 바라본 현대 작품들을 소개합니다. 평상시 보이지 않지만 존재하고 있는 빛의 다양한 색을 가시화하는 프리즘 처럼, 현상 또는 문제에 대한 정답을 제시하기 보다는 현상 자체에 대한 새로운 시각을 보여주는 현대 미술의 섬세한 매력을 느껴보시길 바랍니다.
