2023 was the year of hope for the CICA Museum. Most restrictions from the global pandemic were finally lifted and we were able to resume in-person events. CICA Museum was recognized by major broadcasters, newspapers, and magazines and won multiple awards. Breath: New Media Art 2024 features artists who participated in the 7th CICA New Media Art Conference 2023, Art Teleported 2023, the International Symposium for Visual Culture 2023, and the special exhibition of Cheol-Woong Sim organized by CICA Museum. We truly appreciate that we have featured numerous local and international artists. With the expansion of CICA Kids Lab and social media activities, the number of visitors and followers have also increased. We will continue to try our best to bridge the gap between global artists and local residents, to contribute to our global and local communities understanding each other, and to nurture our creative minds.

2023년은 CICA 미술관에게 희망이 되는 한 해였습니다. 팬데믹으로 인한 제약이 거의 해제되었고 대면 국제 행사를 재개하여 해외 작가들과 미술 애호가들이 다시 한국 CICA 미술관에 방문할 수 있게 되었습니다. 또한 CICA 미술관과 CICA Press가 그간의 꾸준한 국제 행사와 출판물 및 프로젝트를 인정받아 주요 방송국과 신문에 보도되고 수상을 하는 뜻깊은 한 해였습니다.

2017년부터 시작된 연간 뉴 미디어 아트 영문 서적 프로젝트의 일환으로 올해 발간된 Breath: New Media Art 2024 서적은 2023 제7회 국제 뉴 미디어 아트 콘퍼런스, 노마드 아티스트를 위한 아트 텔레포티드 2023, 2023 시각 문화 국제 심포지엄, 심철웅 특별전에 참여한 작가와 학자들을 소개하며, 작품 이미지, 수필, 학술 논문 등을 수록하고 있습니다.

CICA 미술관 프로젝트에 참여해 주신 국내 및 국제 작가들에게 깊은 감사의 마음을 전합니다. CICA 키즈랩 확장과 소셜 미디어 활동과 더불어 CICA 미술관을 찾아주신 관람객과 팔로워들에게도 깊은 감사의 말씀 전합니다.

CICA 미술관은 글로벌 미술 전문가 커뮤니티와 지역 주민을 잇는 교두보가 되기 위해 앞으로도 최선을 다하겠습니다. 또한 세계와 지역 간의 이해를 도움으로써 각각의 커뮤니티에 기여하며, 우리 개개인이 창의적인 마음과 세계적 안목, 문화를 사랑하는 마음을 키워갈 수 있도록 힘쓸 것입니다.

Intro: Brave New World

We are faced with issues of what we breathe in and out. Viruses and microdust all come into our bodies and go out, and connect us to each other. Whether we realize it or not, particles generated from every single one of us travel through us, and morph into something unknown which will deeply affect us.

Pieces of intentions and greediness constantly come to my breath and change me. I decided not to overlook them simply because they are invisible. This is a matter of life and death. I, and we all need action, and Art needs action.

Brave New World: New Media Art 2023 features 42 artists who participated in CICA New Media Art Conference 2022, the 8th International Exhibition on New Media Art 2022, Art Teleported 2022, and International Symposium for Visual Culture 2022 organized by CICA Museum. We thank our artists who showed brilliant works that reflect our life and realities.

서문: 멋진 신세계

우리는 우리가 매일 들이마시고 내뱉는 것들에 대한 여러 가지 문제에 직면해있다. 미세먼지와 바이러스는 우리 몸속으로 들어오고 나가면서 서로를 잇는다. 우리가 인식하든 인식하지 못하든, 우리 각자로부터 생성된 입자들은 한명 한명을 거치면서 변형되고, 우리가 알지 못하는 그 무엇인가가 되어 우리를 뿌리 깊이 바꿔놓을 것이다.

의도와 탐욕의 조각들은 끊임없이 나의 숨으로 들어와 나를 바꾸어놓는다. 더 이상 그것들이 안 보인다고 해서 방관하지 않을 것이다. 이것은 삶과 죽음의 문제이며, 나, 그리고 우리는 모두 행동해야 한다. 예술은 행동해야만 한다.

영문 서적 “Brave New World: New Media Art 2023 (멋진 신세계: 뉴 미디어 아트 2023)”은 2022 국제 뉴 미디어 아트 컨퍼런스, 제 8회 뉴 미디어 아트 국제전, 아트 텔레포티드 2022, 2022 시각문화 국제 심포지엄에 참여했던 42인의 아티스트들을 소개한다. 현대 사회 우리의 삶과 치열한 고민, 리얼리티를 담은 훌륭한 작품들을 보여주신 아티스트분들게 감사드린다.
